The Benefits of a Nimble Production Team

Over time, we’ve become interested in how the people involved in a production shape the experience of making something, and the work itself.

At Cala, we often work with a familiar core team, inviting others to join when there is a need for their skills. It’s an approach that has developed through experience, and one which we continue to observe.

Communication

Working with people we know well can bring a certain ease to communication. There is often an understanding of how each person works and how decisions are made together.

We’ve also noticed the value of clarity around roles. When responsibilities are understood, conversations can feel more straightforward, leaving space to concentrate on the process.

We try to bring this same openness and warmth to our conversations with clients, talent and everyone involved.

Adaptability

A shoot rarely unfolds exactly as imagined. The light shifts, the weather changes, a location becomes busy, or something unexpected draws our attention.

With a flexible team, there can be room to respond without rearranging too much. We might move somewhere else, adjust the timing, or simply follow what is happening in front of us.

We experienced this on a shoot in the Caribbean earlier this year, where the weather was particularly changeable. We had to be versatile with what we shot and when, making the most of the conditions as they shifted throughout the day. It meant continually adjusting our plans and finding opportunities in the circumstances we were given.

Some of the moments we remember most have emerged without being planned.

Less disruption

When photographing a hotel, we are entering a place with its own rhythm. Guests are moving through it, staff are working, and life continues around the production.

We’ve found that a streamlined team can sometimes move more quietly through these spaces, bringing less equipment and requiring less intervention.

This can make it easier to notice the atmosphere of a place as it is, rather than arranging everything around the camera. There is a particular pleasure in allowing the surroundings to contribute something unexpected.

The right team for the job

There are also projects that seem to benefit from a larger group of collaborators. Depending on what we are making, we may work with additional photographers, filmmakers, producers, stylists, hair and makeup artists or models.

We try not to begin with a fixed idea of how many people should be present. Instead, we consider what feels appropriate to the work and the setting.

For us, a nimble approach is less about keeping things small than remaining attentive to what is needed, and allowing the team to take shape from there.
